Baylor Earns Perfection

The Baylor Lady Bears completed a perfect season in Denver Tuesday night. It just happened to be the national championship game against Notre Dame.

Baylor dominated women’s basketball this season and it dominated The Fighting Irish too with a convincing 80-61 victory.

The Lady Bears became the first Division I team to amass 40 victories in a season. They joined UCONN and Tennessee as the only other teams in women’s basketball to finish a season undefeated.

As usual, 6-8 center Brittney Griner stole the headlines in the title game. The junior scored 26 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and recorded five blocks.

Baylor coach Kim Mulkey has now led her team to two national championships. The other was in 2006.

The bad news for women’s teams is Baylor could be just as potent next season. Griner said this week she would return for her senior year.

Baylor's Women's Basketball Train Keeps Rolling

The Baylor women’s basketball team is chasing a NCAA title and history.

If the Lady Bears are stressed about the process, they didn’t play like it Monday night. Baylor earned a trip to the Final Four with a 77-58 drubbing of Tennessee.

Guard Odyssey Sims led Baylor with 27 points. Yes, Virginia, the Lady Bears do have other weapons beside Brittney Griner. Griner made her presence known however. The 6-8 post player scored 23 points, collected 15 rebounds and nine blocks. She is hard to stop when near the basket and she is the most intimidating shot blocker in the women’s game.

Griner left the game early literally and figuratively. She was replaced late in the game and figured to watch the rest from the bench. But with 49.6 second left Sims and Tennessee’s Shekinnia Stricklen exchanged words and shoves which resulted in Griner and a couple teammates leaving the bench to act as peacemakers. Leaving the bench is a definite no-no in college basketball. So Griner and her teammates were banned to the locker room.

There will be no future suspensions in the incident which is good news for Baylor. The Lady Bears have a Final Four semi-final date with Stanford Sunday.

With two more victories, Baylor will not only win its second national championship but finish with a 40-0 record—the most victories in a season for women’s or men’s competition.

Just Another Day at the Office

Baylor’s Brittney Griner continues to lead her team toward a national title.

The 6-8 center turned in another usual stellar performance Tuesday night against Florida. Griner scored 25 points, grabbed nine rebounds, blocked six shots and dished out four assists. Oh by the way, she also recorded one dunk. The second dunk in women’s tournament history.

Undefeated Baylor now moves to the women’s Sweet Sixteen. The Lady Bears are four games away from their second national title.

Can this group be stopped? It is going to become a huge challenge. Griner makes this team a solid national championship contender, but the Lady Bears have other weapons. Baylor entire starting five scored in double figures again the Gators.

It’s nice that Baylor is going on this run. In recent years, UCONN has been the cream of women’s basketball. Maybe it’s time for a new cream. The Baylor gals hope so.

Baylor is Basketball This Season

It says something when your men’s basketball team is 9-0 and it isn’t even the best squad at your university.

The Baylor men’s team is indeed 9-0, but Baylor’s women’s team is 11-0 and ranked No. 1 in the country.

The Lady Bears knocked off No. 2 UCONN last night 66-61 in Waco. Brittney Griner, the Lady Bear’s 6-8 post player, tallied 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds while blocking nine shots. Another stellar performance for a stellar player.

You think Griner could hold her own against some college men players? I say, no doubt.

Griner and her teammates are grabbing some serious ink in Waco and around the country. The Lady Bears played in front of a sold out crowd last night. The Baylor’s men team cannot even claim a sell out yet this season.

The Baylor men’s team is somewhat quietly putting together a solid season. The Bears beat BYU in Utah last Saturday coming back from a 13-point first-half deficit. The win may improve Baylor’s No. 6 and No. 7 national rankings.

But the Baylor men’s team has a long way to go to top the women’s squad. The Lady Bears are on top of the world literally and figuratively these days.

Baylor Basketball

I had the privilege last week to hang out with the Baylor men’s basketball team when it was in Iowa to play Iowa State.

Sometimes we lament the bad things in college sports, but this was an occasion to celebrate the good things. The Baylor basketball family was friendly. They spoke to us (a friend was with me) and made us feel welcomed in their group.

These Texans didn’t appreciate the Iowa winter weather, however. That made me laugh. I saw one guy with a Baylor stocking hat. Didn’t know they sold stocking hats in Texas. At least, the Baylor people could return to Texas. We poor Iowans have to stay here and tolerate snow, ice, cold and wind chill readings below zero.

On the court, the Bears need some victories. They have lost two straight heading into this afternoon’s home game against Oklahoma State. At 12-5 (2-2 in the Big 12), this is a must-win situation. The old saying you need to protect your home court comes into play here. Baylor already has fallen to No. 3 Kansas at home.

Maybe the Bears should get some tips from the Baylor women’s team. That squad is 17-1and ranked No. 1 in the USA.
