Nebraska-Wisconsin Football Tickets

In case you have been caught in a college football vacuum the last two weeks, there is a huge football game Saturday in Madison, Wisconsin. The Nebraska Cornhuskers will play their first Big Ten Conference football game ever that night against the Wisconsin Badgers.

Nebraska is ranked No. 8 in the country and Wisconsin is No. 7. This game needs no build up.

Don’t have tickets for the sold-out, historical affair. You might consider staying home and watching it on ABC.

Just for fun, I have been tracking ticket prices on Stub Hub. A couple weeks ago, I found a few in the $1000-1500 range. Today, I could find only one four digit price at $1200.

But before you go out and celebrate the price drop, consider the overall range is still pricy. The cheapest ticket I could find is $199, but it’s in the upper deck. Translation to the non-buying ticket public: bring plenty of hankies because it’s in the nose-bleed section. Also, consider bringing an oxygen tank for breathing purposes.

If you want to sit closer to the field and actually see the game, be ready to surrender $400-500 per ticket. And simple math says a pair of tickets will cost you the price of a nice, new TV where you could watch several games after Saturday.

I know, I know. It’s the thrill of being there. But to pay prices for this game, you will need to experience a big-time thrill about the size of the states of Nebraska and Wisconsin combined.

College Baseball in Madison, Wisconsin

Madison, Wisconsin is a city known for Wisconsin Badger athletics and in recent weeks and months, protesting.

But I discovered another gem in Madison last week—the Madison Mallards baseball team.

The Mallards are a Northwoods League team made up of current college players. Most of them have only completed their freshman or sophomore seasons. They hope to attraction the attention of some big league scouts.

There is a real love affair between Madison, nearby residents and this team. The Mallards draw between 4,000-6,000 fans per home game. The ballpark, nicknamed the Duck Pond, reminds me of a high-class minor league team.

Steve Schmitt, the owner, is a new friend of mine. He and I bleed St. Louis Cardinals red and bonded over it. Steve puts a good product on the field and offers various ticket, food and drink promotions plus entertainment during the game. He wants fans to experience a good time whether the Mallards win or lose.

The baseball is solid. The atmosphere is great. In a positive way, it’s baseball similar to my days as a child. Pure and simple.

I encourage you to check out the Mallards if you live in the Madison area or have reason to come to the city. You can even land an autograph or two.

Congratulations Wisconsin Badgers

I wasn’t surprised that Wisconsin upset Ohio State Saturday. The then No. 1 Buckeyes were ripe for picking and the Badgers are an outstanding basketball team.

If I was Ohio State, I wouldn’t want to come to Madison, Wisconsin. Last fall the No. 1 ranked football team came west and the Badgers knocked that team off too. So, Wisconsin is an impressive 2-0 over the Buckeyes during this school year.

But back to the Wisconsin hoops team. Coach Bo Ryan runs a great program. In his 10th season in Madison, Ryan is 236-87 and has taken the Badgers to nine straight NCAA tournaments.

Ryan’s teams play tough defense, have good scorers and recruit players that buy into the team concept. Wisconsin is a difficult team to play because it doesn’t make many mistakes. Plus, the Badgers go at their opponents for the entire game. Wisconsin usually has one or two top players and some solid role players. All these ingredients spell success with a capital S.

Look for the Badgers to make noise in the remainder of the regular season and into the NCAA tournament. That seems the Wisconsin way.
