If you are a fan of either Iowa State or Iowa and somehow missed the games last Saturday, count yourself privileged.
In simple terms, the results were plain ugly.
Iowa State started fast against Oklahoma State scoring a touchdown on its first possession. But Cyclone fans had little to cheer about the rest of the way. Iowa State could muster only three more points as the Cowboys thumped Iowa State 31-10.
Iowa State has some serious offensive problems and that doesn’t help matters in a point-crazy Big 12 Conference. The problem starts at quarterback. Neither Steele Jantz nor Jamie Barnett has moved the offense consistently week-after-week. Jantz started the year at quarterback and Barnett then took over. Saturday, Jantz replaced Barnett in the second half. The spark didn’t happen. The Cyclones have had quarterback problems for two seasons now and it appears the merry-go-round isn’t over yet. Stay tuned for who receives the start next Saturday against Baylor.
Over in Iowa City, the visiting Penn State Lions built a 38-0 lead against Iowa. The Hawks put together two meaningless scores and the final was 38-14. The fans were dressed in black-and-gold according to sections in the stadium. They departed black-and-blue. Fans booed Iowa and senior quarterback James Vandenberg didn’t have a problem with the reaction. I’m not a big supporter of booing college athletes, but the fans were apparently extremely frustrated.
Both Iowa State and Iowa have decent chances of victory this Saturday (Iowa at Northwestern), but both opponents are hungry too. Momentum is a strange component in sports and the Iowa in-state teams need “old mo” back on their sides.

Everybody is Cheering for the Northwestern Wildcats
The Northwestern men’s basketball team has never been to the NCAA tournament. I repeat: never!
Sure the Wildcats have had some close calls, but you know what they say about close.
So you can see why everyone is supporting Northwestern’s cause to land that first NCAA bid. People want this underdog to do it.
The Wildcats had a great opportunity last night to grab a signature win against Ohio State and blew it. The Buckeyes won 75-73. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 17-12 overall and 7-10 in the Big Ten Conference. This ‘bubble’ team is working itself off the bubble.
Northwestern is now in serious trouble. It desperately needs a win at Iowa Saturday and a long run in the Big Ten tournament. Anything less could spell the initials NIT (National Invitational Tournament) rather NCAA.
The Wildcats face tough odds. They have been down the road before. They hope the scenery is different this time.

Baylor Seeks Respect
The Baylor Bears men’s basketball team is having a phenomenal year. The Bears are only one of three undefeated teams left (Syracuse and Murray State are the others) and have raced to a 17-0 record.
Baylor is ranked No. 4 in the land but could gain much more respect nationally tonight. The Bears face Big 12 Conference dominator Kansas in Lawrence.
Some say this is an off year for the Jayhawks but many teams would love to have an off year at 14-3. Kansas is 16-2 overall against Baylor and 9-0 at home.
During Baylor’s drubbing of Oklahoma State Saturday, the ESPN announcers said the Kansas game was the Bears most important regular season game ever. That might be and might not be, but Baylor wants the win badly.
The Bears have been road warriors with wins at BYU, Northwestern and Kansas State. This will definitely help with the game at Allen Fieldhouse. Not many visiting teams are happy with the results when they leave that place. Allen Fieldhouse is an extremely difficult place to play.
Baylor can end the Allen Fieldhouse jinx and position itself for a strong postseason run. A victory would give the Bears much love and extra confidence going forward.
It should be one of the most entertaining games of the season.

Watching College Football
Another full list of college football today (Saturday). I read that there are still 13 unbeaten teams heading into today’s action. This might take time to slice that number.
Don’t know why, but I think the TV games are a little weak for Oct. 15. I plan on looking in on Baylor-Texas A&M. Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III is one of the most exciting players in the game this season. He is electric.
I am also planning to watch a little Oklahoma State-Texas action. Not too many people outside of the Texas family would mind if the Longhorns receive a major whipping.
Iowa-Northwestern also holds some interest. The Wildcats have been a major pain in Iowa’s side in recent years. It seems Iowa loses its focus when its plays Northwestern. Focus shouldn’t be a problem this season because the Hawkeyes badly need a victory.
I don’t understand ABC’s fascination with Ohio State this year. The Buckeyes aren’t that good. Maybe Ohio State is the football counterpart of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Maybe ABC is really airing the game because of ranked Illinois.
Enjoy the games whatever ones you watch.

Iowa-Ohio State Meet in Iowa City
What figured to be a red-letter Big Ten game at the beginning of the football season will not happen today in Iowa City, Iowa.
Ohio State (9-1, 5-1) is the only team playing for the Big Ten title and BCS aspirations, while Iowa (7-3, 4-2) hopes to spoil the Buckeyes plans and moved up in the bowl pecking order.
Iowa should provide Ohio State some stiff competition. Some say the Hawkeyes play according to the strength of its competition or big name opponent. The last two weeks Iowa looked sluggish in a win over Indiana and then fell to Northwestern last week. The Hoosiers and Wildcats aren’t exactly the cream of the Big Ten.
Ohio State has frankly played weak competition. The Buckeyes did defeat a solid Miami of Florida team, but lost convincingly to Wisconsin. So people are still wondering if the Buckeyes are huff or puff. Today’s game should be a good indication.
It’s senior day in Iowa City. Iowa can take its frustrations out on Ohio State. The Hawkeyes have plenty of motivation despite a disappointing record.
Ohio State better bring its A-game or the Buckeyes will be in trouble.

Iowa Lays Another Egg Against Northwestern
This is starting to sound like a broken record for the Iowa Hawkeyes—a serious broken record.
Iowa loses again to Northwestern. Count them Hawkeye fans. Your team has now lost five out of the last six to the Wildcats. Coach Kirk Ferentz has losing records against only two teams—and you guessed it—Northwestern is one of those teams.
Most teams consider Northwestern a victory on its schedule. Iowa is probably wishing the Wildcats didn’t reside in the same division next year when Big Ten alignment kicks in.
Iowa fans saw trouble early Saturday when Northwestern took a first lead. But the Hawkeyes seemed to take control in the second half building a 17-7 lead. Then Northwestern kicked in its usual magic against the Hawkeyes and scored 14 straight points for the victory.
Iowa has trouble against pesky, mobile quarterbacks and Northwestern had one in Dan Persa. Running or throwing, the Hawkeyes couldn’t stop Persa. End of story.
Iowa’s hopes of a Big Ten title are now over. It is now playing for bowl position. The problem this week is that Ohio State comes to town with still a shot at the Big Ten crown.
So suddenly the two teams are coming from opposite directions. This is all because Iowa cannot beat a team that finds much joy in defeating the Hawkeyes.
