Pierre Jackson: Big-Time at Baylor University

Baylor point guard Pierre Jackson is simply enjoyable to watch. Well, maybe not if you are the opposing team’s coach or fans.

Jackson is Baylor’s most valuable player and makes the Bears a dangerous team.

The Las Vegas native has already garnered Play-of-the-Year Preseason Honors in the Big 12 Conference. Jackson, a junior college transfer, put together a solid season a year-a go for Baylor. He quarterbacked the team, made key shots, made scoring assists and hit critical free throws. The guy averaged 13.8 points per game last season.

Yesterday, I watched Jackson destroy Boston College in one of those holiday-type tournaments. He was all over the floor and scored 31 points. He shot 10-of-15 field goals including 6-of-10 behind the three-point line. Not bad for a senior who is only 5-10.

One play he made in the Boston College game highlights Jackson’s talent. He tapped the ball away from an opponent but couldn’t directly go to the ball. So, he darted around the player and picked up the ball on the other side. It was like he was tapping the ball to himself. Amazing! Or by the way, this short guy can dunk too.

Keep your on eyes on No. 55. He promises to be involved in most of the Baylor activity on the court.

Pierre Jackson Saves the Day

Baylor’s Pierre Jackson put on his Superman cape Wednesday night and went to work.

Jackson hit a three-point basket with about 17 seconds remaining in the game to help the Bears escape with a 63-60 win at Texas A&M. Baylor was down two points when the 5-10 guard launched the critical shot.

Jackson, a junior college All-American last season, seems to shine in late-game situations. Overall, he has tightened up Baylor’s point guard position this year and has also been a consistent scorer.

If Jackson would not have come through during the waning seconds Wednesday, Baylor was headed for an ugly loss.

The Bears had an 11-point halftime lead but let the Aggies back in the game in the second half. Baylor struggled with finding consistent offense. It was shocking to see the Aggies take leads in the second half. A&M was playing without two starters but benefited from a loud crowd.

The Aggies looked like they were going to steal the game. Superman had other ideas.

The guy might be small in stature but the ‘ole sports term “ice water in the veins” may be one way to describe Pierre Jackson.

Baylor Bears Have Weapons

I watched Baylor’s men’s basketball game with Texas A&M the other evening and just marveled at all the weapons the Bears possess.

Baylor’s rotation goes nine players deep and could expand to 11 if required. For me, the big change is at point guard. Last season, the Bears basically had A. J. Walton and he struggled. This season, Pierre Jackson and Gary Franklin have joined the mix with Walton and the point guard by committee has made a huge difference.

The overall deep rotation gives Baylor many options. For example, senior forward Anthony Jones started every game during his sophomore and junior years plus a few games this season. Jones now comes off the bench. It’s a nice luxury to have a 6-10, three-point threat lurking on your bench. With the rotation, opposing teams must pick their poison. The other night, A&M decided it would not allow the guards to factor in the game. No problem for Baylor. All-American candidate Perry Jones and dunker Quincy Acy took control. The rotation also allows for individual player bad nights. It seems various players step up on various nights.

Baylor is now ranked No. 4 and No. 5 and still undefeated. The Bears are receiving serious national attention. This team has tremendous potential and needs to play to a higher ceiling. So far, the Bears have survived. But as they march deep into Big 12 Conference play, Baylor will need to step up its game and live up to the potential.

If the Bears do that, they are a scary team come March.
