The Big 12 Conference basketball title chase is the most competitive in years and we can thank Kansas.
The Jayhawks are reeling. They have lost three straight and have lost their hold on first place. It’s been about 6-7 years since Kansas has lost three straight.
Kansas’ neighbor, Kansas State is a top of the Big 12 with an 8-2 record. Kansas and Oklahoma State are next at 7-3 and the log jam with Oklahoma, Iowa State and Baylor at 6-4.
This race could be like a horse one—a photo finish.
Kansas State may not hold the top spot alone for long. The Wildcats visit Kansas tonight (Monday). The Jayhawks won’t lose four straight will they? Kansas has already beaten their rival in Manhattan but Kansas State is playing well. Should be a competitive game.
One team not involved in the race is Texas. What has happened to the Longhorns? They have made the NCAA tournament 14 straight years under Coach Rick Barnes. That streak will probably come to an end this season.

A Typical Reaction
Some Texas lawmakers are upset that Texas basketball coach Rick Barnes is getting a $200,000 raise. They cite the poor Texas economy for the displeasure.
Well, the rift about a college coach getting a big raise in times where other people and other academic departments are hardly hanging on is nothing new.
Life is sometime unfair.
Barnes is receiving no public money, its private funds. Basically, then people can do want they want to with their own money. And even in uncertain economic conditions, rich people will have money. And these people will no doubt give some of it to their favorite college athletic teams.
Could this money be used in a better way: possibly? Still I can assure that they are more people giving funds to the Texas athletic department than the biology department. People do care more about athletics at Texas than science.
People like lawmakers and college facility should save their breath. It isn’t going to change anything. Maybe they should be thankful that at least department on campus is doing well. And maybe they should hope for a trickle down movement to spark other departments.

Don't Mess With the Texas Longhorns
Texas proved it is a force again this season in the Big 12 Conference when the Longhorns beat Kansas in Lawrence Saturday.
Teams don’t go into Allen Fieldhouse and handle the Jayhawks like that. Texas didn’t require late game magic. The Longhorns just took care of business. They simply defeated No. 2 ranked Kansas.
I was thinking that Kansas was far-and-above the best team in the Big 12. Now, Saturday’s result shows the Jayhawks have company. And a loss might be good for Kansas.
But Saturday’s spotlight belongs to the Longhorns. Coach Rick Barnes has produced a solid, consistent program in Austin. That is saying something because basketball is like a stepchild to Texas football.
But if Texas keeps winning games like it did Saturday, maybe Texas football talk will take a back seat for at least a couple weeks. Maybe…
