Iowa State fans want to know which Iowa State team will show up against Notre Dame in Round 2 of the NCAA men’s tournament late tonight.
When Iowa State has success on the three-point shot, the results are good. When Iowa State has difficulty connecting on the three-point shot the results are bad. The Cyclones are definitely a two-headed team.
Who wins the “style” battle will also play into the results. Iowa State obviously enjoys the up tempo pace, while Notre Dame prefers the grind-it-out philosophy.
Iowa State has been spotty on defense this season. The Cyclones play offense but struggle on defense. Tonight, might be a good time to pull out the defensive effort.
Iowa State has talented players, but point guard Korie Lucious should determine whether it’s the Cyclone’s night. Lucious was basically a non-factor in the recently completed Big 12 Tournament. He needs to score some points and also collect some assets. Lucious has previously NCAA experience with Michigan State and as a senior this is his last shot.
Cyclone fans hope the word “shot” is plural and not singular.

College Football Teams Look for Gold
Two weeks from today (Feb. 6) is National Signing Day for college football. It’s a day when high school football players declare their love for a particular school and college coaches hope potential turns into results.
Some say recruiting is more important than the actual games in the fall. Recruiting sets up results in those games. That’s why football recruiting services try to sell fans their information and that’s why ESPNU has a day-long special on recruiting come Feb. 6.
The big boys like LSU, Alabama, Michigan, Florida State etc. will do well. These are established programs and players want to play for the top teams. The rest of the schools normally pick what’s left over. The real fear, however, is of the big boys coming in the last minute and taking a special player from a lower-tier-talent school.
Players can and will change their minds in these next two weeks. Until a player signs a commitment letter, they are free to go anywhere. So they are some nervous coaches still trying to hold on to players.
The game inside the game is generally fun, unless you are a coach on signing day left without a player who changes his mind near the end.

Big Ten Conference Race
If you are looking for the cream in the Big Ten Conference this football season, look no farther than the Legends Division.
The Legends could have the Big Ten’s best teams. College football preview guru Phil Steele predicts Nebraska will win the division with Michigan and Michigan State in the two and three positions respectively. Steele believes both Michigan schools could contend for a divisional championship. That’s how evenly matched the three teams look.
The Leaders division is a different story. Wisconsin should win the division easily. In a regular year, Ohio State would challenge but the Buckeyes are ineligible for the title in 2012. That leaves the challengers as Illinois, Purdue, Penn State and Indiana. Can you say weak division? The most excitement could become the battle for fifth place between Penn State and Indiana. With all the problems at Penn State with conflict and player departures, the Hoosiers may have an opportunity to escape last place.
I think the Big Ten has two teams that could make noise on the national stage.
Nebraska finished just 9-4 last season, but the Huskers return seven players each on offense and defense. Nebraska has four difficult conference games with two of those at home. Wisconsin and Michigan come to Lincoln, but the Huskers must travel to Ohio State and Michigan.
Michigan will not contend for a national title, but could place a roadblock in another team’s quest. The Wolverines oppose Alabama in the opener in Arlington, Texas. Michigan has a brutal schedule including true road games at Notre Dame, Nebraska and Ohio State. Its in-state battle with Michigan State is at home.

Pity This Team's Fans
University of Indiana football doesn’t exactly strike fear in the eyes of its opponents. The Hoosiers are well known for their futility in winning games and their doormat status in the Big Ten Conference.
The last time Indiana participated in a bowl game was 2007. You guessed it: the Hoosiers lost 49-33 to Oklahoma State.
With mediocrity comes apathy. With apathy sometimes comes change. Change is the byword for the coaching job at Indiana. Kevin Wilson is the current guy in charge. In Wilson’s first year (2011), the Hoosier’s lone victory was over FCS (Football Champion Series) South Carolina State. Eleven times Indiana was a loser.
Wilson came to Indiana from Oklahoma. He wanted to bring some of that top-mindedness to Bloomington. But some of the Indiana players didn’t like that style. Consequently, those players are no longer with the team.
The good news is that Indiana’s chances for more victories in 2012 are pretty good. The bad news does anyone care?
The Hoosiers four non-conference games are winnable. They are home against Indiana State and Ball State and away at UMASS and Navy. The Big Ten slate will be rugged as always. Even in their home games (Michigan State, Ohio State, Iowa and Wisconsin), it is difficult to find a potential victory.
Wilson desires progress in 2012. Will there be enough progress to interest Indiana fans? That is the real question.

Thoughts on the Sweet 16
The NCAA tournament is now officially a beauty pageant. Just 16 teams remain (Sweet 16) out of the 68 teams that began less than a week ago.
No. 13 Ohio University and No. 11 North Carolina State are the only two real Cinderellas remaining in the field. No. 10 Xavier might be considered a Cinderella but recent tournament success disqualifies them in my estimation.
Xavier and Florida greatly benefited from earlier upsets. Lehigh shocked Duke in the opening round giving Xavier a better path to the Sweet 16. Florida’s thank-you card should go to Norfolk State who disposed of No. 2 Missouri. Both Xavier and Florida had tournament history on their side. No 15th-seeded teams have ever advanced to the Sweet 16.
There are plenty of traditional powers remaining. For example all the No. 1 seeds are still playing—Kentucky, Michigan State, Noth Carolina and Syracuse. Then you have teams such as Florida and Kansas. So besides a few bumps on the Final Four highway, the selection committee did another good job.
The window for upsets is becoming smaller. But wouldn’t it be great if Ohio and NC State could keep advancing? I cannot give Xavier any love because the Musketeers play Baylor Friday night.

Illinois' Bruce Weber in Trouble
Is there any college coach in America on a hotter hot seat than Illinois’ Bruce Weber?
The Illini continue to tank their season. Last night, they suffered another home loss this time to Michigan. Illinois is now 17-13 overall and a woeful 6-11 in the Big Ten Conference. The Illini need a miracle to save their season and secure a NCAA tournament bid.
This has been a strange, strange season for Illinois.
A couple weeks ago, Weber came out and blamed himself and his players for the team’s performance. Weber’s honesty was refreshing in a business that usually only talks coach-speak. But many people didn’t like the honesty (and probably the truth) and accused Weber of giving up on the season.
Well, Illinois is probably about ready to give up on Weber. The Illini already fired football coach Ron Zook. Weber is next on the hit list.
I feel for Weber. He’s a decent coach and a good man. Frankly, he’s a man of character. We need those guys in collegiate athletics. But unfortunately, coaches are judged largely by wins and losses.
But even if he gets fired, Weber will be okay. He is a smart guy and will land on his feet somewhere probably again in coaching. Let’s hope that is the outcome.

Talking the NCAA Big Dance
We are approaching the stretch run of the college basketball season and anxiety and excitement fill the air.
If your team is on the NCAA Big Dance bubble, it’s anxiety. If your team is playing well and has racked up a number of wins, you’re feeling pretty confident and excited.
This time of year is a real indicator of how the post season will probably turn out. You want to secure a number of wins in a row and be playing at a high level. Michigan State is usually a team that reflects this case. Consequently, if you are struggling now and even make the NCAA tournament, chances are you won’t be making much noise there. Until last Saturday night, I would have said Creighton fits that bill. But it won a huge BracketBuster game and maybe turned the season around.
Conference tournaments start in the next 2-3 weeks. Bubble teams want to perform well and even win their particular league tournament. But the teams firmly already in the tournament really cannot improve their seeding that much. Of course, the below .500 teams are hoping for a conference tournament miracle but they probably will just be playing out the season.
You will hear of many different NCAA Big Dance predictions this time of year. But don’t believe them. How anybody can predict a No. 14 seed against a No. 3 seed in a particular region puzzles me. But I guess people read the stuff, so the predicators stay in business.
But I can wait until Selection Sunday. It will be all black-and-white on that day and then the fun really begins.

Iowa's Fran McCaffery and the Chair
YouTube has been abuzz this week over Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery’s chair incident.
McCaffery picked up a chair forcefully during a timeout in the Michigan State game Tuesday night. The fiery coach had picked up a technical foul and was apparently still plenty angry. At least, no one was in the chair when McCaffery decided to take out his frustrations. That would have been really interesting.
Obviously, McCaffery has downplayed the incident. He said he was fighting for his team and that he won’t change his style. The coach does elevate his blood pressure at times (see his face), but he isn’t quite in Bobby Knight’s class just yet. Knight threw a chair completely across the floor.
McCaffery needs to select his temper outburst better however. Iowa was down by about 40 points the other night when Fran went off. It’s tough to buy that ‘fighting for my team’ argument when you should accept getting blown out and move on.
McCaffery is still under grace with the administration and fans but he better be careful. Wins overcame many faults. But if he doesn’t produce the wins, look out Fran. This anger act will grow tired real quickly.

Transfers a Plenty
The Iowa State men’s basketball team must have the most transfers of any school in the NCAA. In fact, four of the five starters transferred from other programs.
The players didn’t exactly come from sisters-of-the-poor schools either. Schools include Marquette, Michigan State, Penn State, Minnesota and Southern Illinois.
There is definite talent in the group but growing pains are part of the process. Getting all the players to buy into the new team is more challenging than it seems. But if anyone can do it, Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg has the credentials. Hoiberg became an outstanding player for the Cyclones and was a serviceable player in the NBA. He also has experience as a NBA executive.
Iowa State should cause some teams in the Big 12 Conference fits. Texas experienced that first hand last night when the Cyclones outlasted the Longhorns in Ames.
One thing that scares me about Iowa State is Royce White. White is a 6-8, 280-pound center that brings the ball up the court. He doesn’t do it occasionally but frequently. In my opinion, guards were made for that purpose not centers. White should be content to stand under the basketball, catch the ball and do his work.
White also needs to spend more time practicing free throws. When you cannot even hit the basket, rim or anything, then you realize you have problems.
But in the final analysis, Iowa State is a fun team to watch this year even if it seems like eating at a buffet with all the different players.

I Enjoyed This One
HappI must admit I didn’t watch much of the college football bowl buffet yesterday (Monday), but the game I did view was a dandy.
I watched Georgia-Michigan State in the Outback Bowl for two reasons: the potential of an interesting matchup and the game was in high definition on my television.
The game didn’t disappoint me.
If you didn’t watch the contest, you would have thought the final score (33-30 in triple overtime) was a result of a slugfest. That wasn’t the case especially in the overtime periods.
This game actually featured some defense a strange sight in modern college football. And there were only nine total points scored in the overtimes all on field goals.
The final play of the affair was a defensive one. Michigan State blocked the Georgia field goal attempt to claim the victory.
I’m not against offense in college football, but I enjoy seeing some defensive stands too. This game restored my faith in that side of the ball.
Actually both teams should have been proud of their defenses. At least now, Georgia and Michigan State won’t be tempted to go out and find new defensive coaches like many schools do this time of year.
Happy New Year.

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski Record Will Remain
Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski became the No. 1 coach in college wins last night when the Blue Devils defeated Michigan State. “Coach K” now has 903 wins, one better than his mentor Bobby Knight.
Coach K will add a bunch of victories to that total before he retires. But I seriously doubt that anyone will break his record. Records are meant to be broken as the saying goes, but this one is officially now off limits.
There aren’t enough coaches in the business that will last as long as the Coach K's, Bobby Knights and Adolph Rupps. With the massive salaries head coaches make in these times, what is the real incentive to attempt to break the record? Coaches now can put in a limited number of years, take their money and retire to the golf course. Plus, why put yourself through the rigors of college basketball for 30 years? The shelf life of college coaches is just different in this era.
That’s why Coach K's record is so remarkable. The guy has won a huge amount of games in a long period of time. It’s definite history and real cause for celebration.

College Basketball Junkie
OIf you are a college basketball junkie, these 24 hours are for you. ESPN’s Tip-Off Marathon is in full swing.
I count 10 games today on the ESPN networks starting at 5 a.m. in the central time zone. Of course there were games before during the late-night and early morning hours. For example, Northern Iowa played in California and had a 1 a.m. Iowa starting time. Whew. Was the postgame meal dinner or breakfast?
I am looking forward to the Baylor-San Diego State game at 1 p.m. central. Baylor has restocked its roster and it will be interesting to see how the new messes with the old.
Most people will look to the night action. Duke and Michigan State is one game, while Florida-Ohio State is another. The last major draw is Kentucky-Kansas. I wonder while these teams aren’t playing a 2 o’clock in the morning. I know why and so do you. It’s all about television sets and ratings.
Usually it takes me a while to warm up to the college basketball season. I’m coming off the baseball season and football is still in high gear. But if it is ESPN’s desire to tempt me, the network is doing a good job.
Enjoy the basketball junkies.

Basketball on Ship III
Friday night’s college basketball game between North Carolina and Michigan State on the navy carrier ship was a great night for America. It was a fitting occasion to celebrate Veteran’s Day with many servicemen and servicewomen in attendance.
Our country has gone through a lot in recent years, but it was great to step aside from the problems and celebrate America and the men and women’s service for this great nation. It reminded me of July 4th in the middle of November.
It was one of the few times I have ever watched a basketball game and concluded that there were no losers. Yes, the Tar Heels did defeat the Spartans on the scoreboard, but both teams were winners on this night. I imagine Michigan State was disappointed in the loss, but what an experience for all the players and staff involved.
Sounds like this might become an annual event playing a college basketball game on Veteran’s Day. I think that would be awesome.
We never have too many opportunities to celebrate this great nation and the sacrifices of our military personnel. Playing college basketball on Veteran’s Day is a fitting tribute.

Basketball on a Ship II
Last April, I wrote a blog about North Carolina and Michigan State playing basketball on a carrier ship. Tonight, the game becomes a reality.
I think it’s a unique and great way to honor veterans on Veteran’s Day.
These are two historic programs and a great way to kick off the college basketball season. Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson will be in attendance. The two starred at North Carolina and Michigan State respectively.
Of course, we Iowans will pay close attention to North Carolina sophomore Harrison Barnes. The Iowa native had a productive first season for the Tar Heels and is posed for a banner second-year campaign. It will be interesting to see how far he can elevate his game.
The college sports world really needs this contest at this time. With the fallout at Penn State, it’s great that this game will steal some coverage from that ugly mess. For a while anyway, we can focus on the true spirit of competition and receive North Carolina against Michigan State too. It will be a special night.
I want to say thank-you to all the veterans on Veteran’s Day. We are honored and certainly blessed by your service. My dad served in Germany in World War II. I remember him on this day too.

Strange Saturday for Iowa's Big Two Football Teams
Talk about getting blindsided with the results of the Iowa and Iowa State games. Wow.
On paper, the Hawkeyes should have owned Minnesota. Then, they played the game. The result was the Gophers doubled their victory total to two. Iowa choked a lead in the fourth quarter and lost 22-21. The Hawkeyes couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it. Minnesota, if truth was told, probably couldn’t believe it. It made the Gophers season.
Now, Iowa must regroup before facing the Michigans---Michigan and Michigan State. Those games now will scare any rabid Hawkeye fan.
Iowa State played Texas Tech last Saturday. The Red Raiders were coming off a stunning upset of Oklahoma the week before. I thought Texas Tech might be a little flat and the Cyclones could give the Red Raiders a competitive game. But it turns out Texas Tech was REALLY flat.
Iowa State mirrored a struggling team entering the game. The Cyclone had lost four straight and looked real bad during the streak.
Well, Iowa State found itself a quarterback. Redshirt freshman Jared Barnett started his first game and ran the show brilliantly. Iowa State pounded Texas Tech 41-7.
I figured Tech would win in a fairly close game. The only time the Red Raiders were in the game was at 0-0. Good figure.
The old saying came true in Iowa last Saturday: “On any given Saturday, any team can beat someone else.” That is one factor that makes college football a great game.

Watch Some College Football Saturday
There is a number of interesting college football matchups tomorrow (Saturday).
Stanford is the No. 1 team on upset alert this week. The Cardinal has visions of playing for a possible national championship, but this week’s game at Southern California (USC) should test Stanford’s resolve. The probation-ridden Trojans are in the unusual spoiler role and would like to put a blemish on this Andrew Luck team.
Is Kansas State for real? We will find out this week when the undefeated Wildcats host Oklahoma. It’s a bad time to play the Sooners after Texas Tech upset Oklahoma last Saturday. If the Sooners still want to cling to small hopes of a national championship, they cannot lose any more games.
Undefeated Oklahoma State hopes to continue its push for a national championship when the Cowboys host Baylor. The Bears can score points but probably cannot stop the Cowboy offense. This game could end up 73-55.
Has Michigan State come down from its miracle win over Wisconsin? The Spartans travel to Nebraska tomorrow and it should be a tight one. Both are one-loss teams but the Spartans are undefeated in Big Ten Conference play.
Wisconsin hopes to avoid another loss this week. The Badgers travel to Ohio State Saturday. The road was a pitfall in East Lansing last Saturday, but one-loss Wisconsin needs to rebound if it wants to compete for a conference championship game.
What games are you watching this weekend? What team do you think should be on upset alert?

Russell Wilson Proves Anew He is a Winner
I must admit it was pretty hard seeing Russell Wilson in the motion “W” helmet last night representing the Wisconsin football team.
I followed the guy for three years at North Carolina State. But as they stay, “Life goes on.”
Wilson is an impact player and I knew he would perform extremely well at Wisconsin. He gave Badger fans a taste last night. Wilson threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another (46 yards) in Wisconsin’s destruction of UNLV. Wilson went 10-for-13 passing and totaled 62 yards on two carries. It was a typical Wilson performance really.
The laughable part was reading Internet message boards later. Some people think Wilson needs to prove his ability against a proven team. They weren’t impressed with Wilson against an outmanned opponent.
Believe me folks Wilson will perform against the big boys. He’s a former All-ACC quarterback and won’t become fazed facing the likes of Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan State or Penn State.
Badger fans were giddy over the summer when they learned Wilson was coming to their team. Last night, the rest of the teams on Wisconsin’s schedule realized why they weren’t so giddy.

Nebraska: Class of Big Ten?
If Nebraska thought it could sneak into the Big Ten Conference and blend in with the other teams, that won’t happen. Many of the so called experts are predicting the Huskers will win the league in their first season in it.
So Nebraska is the new kid in the conference and already the target falls squarely on the Huskers. Don’t trip over the welcome mat boys.
The Huskers are known for their defense and again this season it will carry the team. Two second-team All Americans return in defensive tackle Jared Crick and linebacker Lavonnte David. The defense will need to lockdown opponent’s offenses and steal some points because the Husker offense will probably struggle.
On offense, Nebraska usually favors the run. But it might open things up more this season. Regardless, quarterback Taylor Martinez hasn’t exactly struck fear in opponents and is a better runner than passer. That needs to chance if the Huskers want more balance.
The schedule makers did Nebraska no favors in 2011 as the Huskers must travel to Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan. They do play one favorite at home however—Michigan State.
It should become a memorable initial Big Ten season for the Huskers. Nebraska hopes it will land on the good side of memorable as opposed to the lost expectations side.

Basketball on Ship
I must admit, some days I’m just plan slow. When I saw last week the words Michigan State, North Carolina and carrier, I thought the two college basketball powers were going to play a game at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York. Teams play games frequently at neutral sites.
When I investigated it further, I realized that the carrier was a small “c” and this carrier was a ship in California. Yes, Michigan State and North Carolina will play a basketball game on a real ship.
There will be no public sale of tickets. You either need to know somebody or be somebody to attend this game. Can you imagine the security issues involved?
This is no ordinary ship. It is normally used for military stuff not playing some basketball game. I assume the uniqueness of this event will draw considerable interest.
Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson will serve as honorary captains. I would like to see the two battle each other in a little one-on-one competition. It would be a throwback to their NBA days.
But let’s hope this game comes off without incident. These are troubled times and all these teams want to do is offer some friendly competition (minus the rough play under the basket) between two popular schools.

College Basketball Transfer Challenges
Des Moines Register (Iowa) sportswriter Rick Brown wrote an interesting article Sunday on the problems of players transferring in college basketball. He talked to several college coaches particularly those in Iowa.
It’s a complex problem, but basically players want instant playing time and instant success. It’s another problem reflected on the American culture. We have microwave ovens and fast food. We are in a hurry. We don’t want to wait. We don’t read the instruction book first. We just assemble the toy.
Many college players are spoiled. They have been told their entire lives they are special. When they get to college, the competition is fierce. Often they are no longer the best player on a team. Their feelings are hurt. They demand playing time. They are down on the depth chart. It’s time to search for greener grass. Surely, another college team will treat them special.
As I started before, the other main reason players transfer is trouble at their school. Players find their way to the police station or have trouble academically.
I have a prime example of this transfer problem only 70 miles from me. The Iowa State men’s program have had its share of departures and arrivals recently.
Previous coach Greg McDermott couldn’t retain players. They were not happy campers. That’s one major reason McDermott posted a poor record and fled when he could to Creighton.
First-year coach Fred Hoiberg is in the receiving line. Hoiberg is stockpiling players for the future. He will have players available next year from Minnesota, Michigan State, Southern Illinois and Penn State. Hoiberg was an outstanding player in college and serviceable in the professional ranks. He is a former NBA executive. Those are all good reasons why Iowa State is suddenly on the receiving end. Players want success. They want the NBA.
Hopefully, Hoiberg will mold these players into a team. Players need to realize that team goals translate into individual success too.
